The South West SMART Club is run by a committee elected by the members each autumn. In addition to the usual tasks involved in running a membership organization of this sort, on behalf of the members, they engage in dialogue with the Government, DTI, RDA, and other public bodies to attempt to generate a solution for some of the more difficult matters of common concern.

Alan Bennetts
(Chairman)
|
Alan is MD of Bay Systems. The company won a SMART award for a magneto-strictive actuator design and application. The everyday activity of the company is the supply of equipment and consulting services in the area of noise and vibration. Recent achievements of note have been the building of a semi-anechoic chamber that achieved 68dB of isolation and was completed in 8 weeks and to budget. Alan is a member of the Institute of Acoustics, The Society of Automotive Engineers and The Society of Environmental Engineers.

Chris Wilde

Chris has retired as a practicing dentist and MD of Interdental, a company with interests in the development of new ?white? tooth repair and replacements composites based around cyanoacrylate compounds. He is Vice-Chairman of the Club.

Lorie Randall
(Treasurer)
|
Lorie is best described as an entrepreneur, with considerable skills in managing small business and community projects. Specifically she has developed and implemented projects for Refrigeration Recycling and the Recycling of WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment).
Lorie has the key abilities to: -
*integrate industrial interests with Not for Profit and
Community enterprises
* manage finance and develop budgets for
multi- million pound developments
*win resources and support.

David Avery
(Membership Secretary)
|
Membership Secretary. David is involved with 2 companies: Nav-Tech Electronics Ltd that has developed a very high frequency radar sensor for driverless vehicle guidance and other obstacle detection systems. Micromac Filtration that specializes in removing small solid particles from effluent water. In the club he looks after all membership issues and is the first point of contact for members seeking support or information from the club.

Tim Crocker

Tim is a Director of 3D Instruments which has interests in attitude sensing and in high power DC-DC conversion for motor vehicle drives and industrial control. He has taken the lead in the club in dealing with policy and financial issues with HMG.

Phillip Denne

|
Phill is the MD of Guilden and the godfather of electromagnetic rams, devices that look and behave like hydraulic rams, but which run purely from electricity and are silent, oil free, quick and precise. He is working extensively with the UK MOD on a number of world leading projects.

John Edgley

|
John is the winner of a SMART award for the development of a new method for building light aircraft structures. He successfully completed a prototype glider and is now planning to develop a two seat version.
He designed the Optica slow flying observation aircraft which achieved some success and wide national publicity in the 1980s.
John has been a Committee member since the start and Chairman of the SW SMART club from 1997 to 2000.

Clive Green

Clive is MD of Quartzlock Ltd who R&D, produce and sell globally, LF Off Air, Quartz, GPS, Rb and H Atomic frequency references + hi-res (le-17) frequency and (50fs) phase measurement and distribution systems. Some are world leaders. One of only 3-4 calibration labs world-wide, commercially, at this level.

John Mitchell

John is MD of AllVoice Computing plc who specialise in speech recognition products and software development. AllVoice exports via worldwide patenting and other Intellectual Property. AllVoice has negotiated licenses with US companies such as Dictaphone and IBM. However, John has spent many years successfully litigating its patent rights against other organisations in Massachusetts, Delaware (Dragon and Lernout & Hauspie) and has a current case in Texas (v Scansoft). John has established the Patent Reform Group (www.patentreformgroup) and advises Government as part of its Patent Enforcement Project. This was set up following his efforts to establish a Patent Defence Union. John provides practical IPR advice and support to club members and other SME innovative companies.
